Leaving Certificate

Academic Programme


The Leaving Certificate is the national examination which students take when they complete second level education. Students in St Thomas’ take one of two programmes:


The Established Leaving Certificate
or
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)


The Leaving Certificate

On the basis of the Leaving Certificate results, points are calculated for entry to Higher Education. Other educational institutions and employers also require a certain level of attainment in the Leaving Certificate for entry to training or employment.

The Leaving Certificate takes two years. Students must do a minimum of five subjects. In St Thomas’ students must undertake six, one being a second language. It is usually possible for foreign national students to take their own language in the examination.

Business Studies

Physical Education
Religion
Music

Extra English tuition is available to all students whose first language is not English.
